Disaster Risk Reduction Project

Disaster Risk Reduction Programme for Flood Affected Families of Bihar in Northern India
Flood is a calendared event in Bihar.  Help Age Indian intervene in the aftermath of 2007 Kosi flood,  in North Bihar which covered total 18 villages in two districts namely Darbhanga and Madhubani. The overarching goal is to improve the resilience of the communities and their preparedness to disasters. This micro-financing inculcate a sense of confidence among the persons who are at the twilight of their life. Awareness rising over disaster preparedness and mitigation measures for pre, during and post phases of disaster are the main focus for making resilient community. For better prepared community Material support like Boats, life Jackets have also been provided in tandem with grain bank and fodder bank support.  Through advocacy and linkages with various government departments and social security scheme project DRR try to empower and ensure the rights and entitlement of community. Community participation at all level of decision making has been ensured. Special care has been given to destitute elderly. There are some challenges have also been faced during the implementation of project like to organize the elderly and link them with IGP is a very difficult task. Area of operation is very difficult which marooned of for four months during monsoon.
Achievements so far:

  • 196 ESHGs have been formed
  • 95 ESHGs have been trained
  • 21 ESHGs (65 office bearer ) have been trained
  • 10 village level federation have been formed
  • 10 DPMC have been formed
  • 10 Grain Bank have been formed
  • 7 fodder bank have been formed
  • 18 boats have been distributed
  • 70 life jackets have been distributed
  • Functional CBDRR maps drawn in 18 villages  and planning process have started  at the village/community level
  • Through 2 MMU 8000  families have access to  Primary qualified medicare
  • 20 CHVs have been received Health kits
  • 17 Elderly have been benefited through IOL
  • 67 Group have been graded
  • 67 Group have been graded and received seed capital
  • Awareness raising and rights literacy camps for ESHG members including relief code through one ( 1)  Workshops.
  • 20 CHVs have been received training through 2 training camp for community health and epidemic management. Each village  have a volunteer trained for first medical response in the event of flood
  • Through Practitioners of Alternative Medicine training 36 locally relevant and trained emergency Medicare available.
  • Training of DPMCs in CBDRR approaches through trainings/workshops have been given through 3 module
  • Forty (40) persons have been  trained over Micro-credit, micro-enterprise and livelihood enhancement action plan(LEAP)
