This programme started in 1978, is in partnership with more than 200 NGOs in 25 states of the country and is presently servicing about 16,000 beneficiaries. The programme is Community based but also involves old age homes and day care centers across the country.
This programme has been etched on a welfare mode, focusing on subsidizing the basic needs of the older people, such as food, clothing, medicines, repair of houses etc who are economically deprived and socially alienated. It also aims to foster independence and dignity, thereby restoring their rightful place in their families and society. Each beneficiary is provided with cash and kind worth about Rs. 500 a month.
In 2005, the programme underwent a programme shift from "welfare" to "development". The new approach focuses on the poorest of the poor, and looks at community development rather then individual welfare, fosters independence among older people, encourages long term sustainability. Through this approach it addresses the issue of equity coupled with a sustainable mode, aims to reach out to a larger number of older persons.
A major achievement of this programme these years has been to bring older people together and address their personal issues of Isolation Poverty and Neglect.
